BIAFRA KE? --by Kreed

It is in the nature of man to forget the past once he sets out on a greedy quest. The bloody Civil war of 1967-1970, was one that could have been completely avoided, if the two men at the helm of the respective divide, swallowed their pride, dropped their ego and shifted their stance, for the sake of the unforeseen losses that was experienced during the war.

It's just pathetic to know that the selfishness of a few individuals can result to so many bloodbaths. What annoys me more however is this, the certain few never—I repeat; never pay the ultimate price which is death. I'm no sadist but if anyone has no problem watching others die for their greedy cause, then they don't deserve to live.

About 50YEARS after that war, history is about to repeat itself. A different set of generation, being instigated by another selfish individual, is about to make that same mistake. Sadly, a similar method used by the dreaded boko haram group, has been used to draw sympathisers to their camp. The employment issue of this country has been exploited several by unscrupulous and greedy individuals, who feed most of these unemployed and uneducated individuals lies, telling them what they want to hear, not necessarily the truth.

Fine, I agree the marriage has been far from ideal but the question we should ask ourselves is this: Is it really the case of marginalisation by the government at the federal level or the underperformance of the respective state government in this self-seeking independent region? The ignorance of these protesters is on another level. The mastermind behind this plot must be sipping champagne by the pool side, while the pawns continue to roast under the scourging sun for a shady cause.

Well, it is obvious these misguided folks have forgotten so soon, their current protest is just one of the many scam campaigns which has led to blood shed of many innocent Nigerians instigated by some egotistical hypocrites. I’ll start with the Niger Delta Militants, while the obviously had a far better pretext for their fracas against the government than this current Biafra campaign by individuals with parochial mindsets, the masterminds behind this campaign had their secret agenda.

Their claimed aim was just a mask for their key agenda, which of course was a share of the country’s national moi-moi. The environmental degradation of the Niger Delta region is still going unabated and these so called liberators have suddenly turned blind towards these and a host of other issues for which they so much killed for. The other day, I came back from Church to meet two police convoys parked in front of our home. When I inquired from our neighbour who they came with, he told me it was one of the militant kingpins. Up until that day, I never knew they were entitled to official security. For the curious cats, he had actually come to inspect one of his many lands. Yes, you can say that again, they’re living large while the injustice in that region continues unabated. It’s all they wanted, the riches and nothing more.

The boko-haram violence is the most incensing. How can anybody be foolish enough to strap a bomb around his/her body, just because someone, obviously cleverer, had convinced them to do so? This is far from ignorance. Words can’t describe this. This group is yet to actually tell us what they’re fighting for, so I won’t waste any second on their matter. But my point is this, those behind the plot, would never send their kids or go by their selves into the fray. If they were truly fighting for a cause, they would be at that war front with you, not behind their closets. Don’t fall a victim to this deception. Read between the lines and learn to see behind the castle walls.

TALES FROM THE SLUM 4 --by Slick

DUPE’S RESIDENCE
It was a well furnished two bedroom flat that housed the latest of furniture; an oval glass coffee table, a 55 inch plasma TV that hung lavishly on the wall and an air-conditioning system that sucked out every droplet of sweat and perspiration that formed on the skin. She owned a kitchen that provided everything that could make one salivate upon entry. It was a rare thing to find apartments as cozy as hers in this part of the neighbourhood. Rumors had it that she was the daughter of a millionaire who had run away from home to hike inconspicuously. But the road to achieving this feat in her life had not been a funny one as she had done countless unspeakable things with men to survive in this harsh world. To her, her current status and accommodation was a reward for her sweat and sins. Several thoughts of quitting the life had popped into her mind on several occasions but she always consoled herself saying that she had gone too far to turn back now. Except of course if she met a man that could provide her with all that she needed and more. This was the question on her mind as she constantly brought to mind memories of the times spent with her new lover Mustapha.

She had just swallowed a glass of orange juice when the door-bell rang. She looked at her watch and the time had struck 3:30 pm. She was not expecting anyone that early and so she arose and curtsied towards the door to meet the slim figure of her friend Anita standing in the doorway. Anita had not waited to be asked in before she walked in, threw her Michael Kors handbag on the settee and finally collapsed into a single seat. Common sense had told Dupe that something was off but chose not to inquire rather she just watched her friend in silence after ensuring that the door was securely locked. Finally Anita spoke.

“Dupe, my world is about to crumble. As in, devil wan wear pant give me for market.”

“Anita, wetin dey happen? Talk to me, I be babe like you.”

“My sister, na die I dey so o.”

“Ani, give yourself brain o. Why you wan come die for my house na?” Dupe exclaimed.

“Dupe, Jason’s father is back o. The devil himself is in the slum.” Anita screamed as she repeatedly
slapped her laps with her palms in confusion of what her next move would be. In annoyance, Dupe gave a long hiss and eyed Anita in the most despicable manner possible.

“So na that wan make you dey shout like woman wey dey labour room? I even think say you don get HIV abi your mama don die.” Dupe said in a sarcastic tone.

“Na you go get HIV and na your mama go die. I am saying something serious here Dupe.”

“Well, if you must know, James abi na Papa Jason has been around for about two weeks now o. That was why I called you severally the other day that you refused to pick my calls.”
Anita listened in silence.

“I saw him the other day Mustapha dropped me off at my gate after our regular hangouts. James approached me and told me to talk some sense into you for you to get back together with him.”

“God forbid. After all these years, he just comes back and wants to waltz in back to my life. I think he’s mad. Moreover you know I am in love with my Chinedu.” Anita replied.

"Foolish girl, sit down there dey do lover girl make I go bring Golden morn for kitchen make we chop". Dupe said as she handed Anita some tissue paper to wipe her tears that were already ruining her makeup.

With Dupe out of sight, Anita decided that it was time to come plain with the truth. It was time to explain to Chinedu how the little boy that she called her younger brother, claimed was a product of her mother’s late pregnancy suddenly turned out to be her son. Would he ever forgive her for lying to him all these while? Was his love for her that potent enough to overlook her shortcomings? These were questions she realized that only time could give answers to.

CHANEL 5
Chanel 5 was a popular street club that served as a den to people that engaged in various vices both legitimate and versa. It was always fully packed during the weekends and served as an ordinary drinking parlour during the weekdays for those that wanted to unwind after a stressful day at work. It boasted of strippers, cheap and illicit drugs, illegitimate business deals and contracts. Destinies and fates of people were mostly decided in this one storey building that was separated into two halves; the upper part serving as the VIP section and the disc jockey’s arena.

The police had on several occasions raided this spot, but were always bought over by the management of the place. A lot of people had tried to discover the identity of the real owner of this ghetto club but to no avail because he maintained a low profile and silenced anyone that was too nosy.

It was a Friday and the doors of the club were waiting to be opened as heavily built men that worked as bouncers searched everyone thoroughly before allowing entry. It was no surprise to people denied entry mostly because they didn’t dress appropriately or had a bad aura around them. Chinedu was on the queue, but he was not here out of his own volition. Tunde his friend who worked as a DJ at Chanel 5 had convinced him to show up at the doors of the club and just mention his name.

Tunde had a good rapport with the security at the club and as such could not be denied anything. Chinedu had explained his predicament and his latest ordeal with the King of the Slum to Tunde, who advised to come around his workplace just to see where he could fit in. Chinedu was moderately dressed with headphones in his ears as he listened to Jay z’s “99 problems” waiting for his turn to be searched. It eventually got to his turn and he engaged in small talks with the bouncer who searched him like he was in possession of hard drugs.

“Baba, take am easy na. Na DJ Teeto say make I turn up for here o.”  Chinedu spat out in annoyance with the way the bouncer rough handled him.

“Na so all of una dey always talk. Shut up make I do my work.” The bouncer replied.

“Shey make I call am for phone ni make you follow am relate?” Chinedu inquired.

“Just enter inside. But if you no buy me drink, I go come for you o’’ The bouncer scoffed.

“You na main gee. Just use this one hold side.” Chinedu whispered as he pressed a crispy note into
the bouncer’s right hand and headed into the floors of the club. He scanned around for Tunde who was busy cueing the next song that would lift the spirits of the dancers. Tunde was first to spot him and motioned at him with the wave of a hand to move a spot close to him, so they could communicate better as it was hard to hear each other as a result of the deafening sounds coming out of the Sony speakers hung at strategic points of the hall.

“Chinedu Chilaski, what the deal man. I think say you no go come.”  Tunde said as he extended a handshake to his friend.

“Baba, I gentle o. Low key as usual.” Chinedu replied trying to be as cheerful as possible.

“Welcome to my world o. This is what I am at night o.”

“You dey try o. Everyone here seems to know your name.”

“Well, that’s what you get for being a good DJ. Na small small sha.”

Tunde replied trying to be as humble as possible. He noticed someone walking to towards his spot to make a request for a song and immediately told Chinedu to have drinks on him as he had a job to keep. Chinedu grinned and checked his pockets to ensure that his phone and wallet were still in his possession because Chanel 5 had been rumoured to house all sorts of criminals who were not rookies at what they did. Luckily for him, he still had his personal items on him. He then decided to order a beer and probably sit at a table to watch the Ladies of the Pole do their thing.

Chinedu was just about to settle in his seat when a Lady dressed in thongs and a bra that revealed a large portion of her voluptuous breasts, wearing a pair of red stilettos approached him and inquired if he was interested in a lap dance. He declined politely and wondered why she had chosen this path as a means of livelihood. Well, that was sour state of things in the slum; he thought to himself. Anything was obtainable here. He looked around and saw Marijuana parcels and cash exchange hands, women laughing loudly at the dry jokes of the men they came with, bottles of expensive wines and alcohol. He was shocked to his bones when he inquired at the cost of a bottle of Ciroc. Someone in the VIP had just ordered seven of those bottles. He had envied this lifestyle for a moment but reminded himself that it led to nothing but destruction.

The vibration from his mobile phone jolted him out of his thoughts back to reality. He had two notifications to attend to. The first was a text message from his sister Gloria. It was to inform him that she had arrived late from the village and she was outside his door.
The second was a text message from Tunde telling him that an opportunity for the post of transactions and logistics manager had popped up. The last person that occupied had mysteriously disappeared for about a week and someone had to fill in that position as quickly as possible. Chinedu replied Tunde’s text message as follows:

“ Baba, tell whoever is in charge that Chinedu is in the building”

Tunde smiled at him to confirm his receipt of the reply to his text message. The heavens had suddenly smiled upon Chinedu his friend. He hoped Chinedu could fill this void that had just presented itself.

CENTURY --by Rose

A hundred long years
A thousand different tales
Treasured myths and cultures
Today’s meat for vultures
How shall the world be?

A hundred long years
Ten decades of sweat
A thousand lost memories
Lost and found treasuries
Filling world galleries

Shall cars be made to fly
And waters take their flight?
As the ozone veil departs
What happens to nature
As we poach the future?

A hundred years to come
I’ll be an ancestor
To a lost race with no culture
For values have been ripped
The shreds gone in the wind

I shall sit and watch
Only a hundred years from now
Is a century

LOVERBOY 2 --by Nickz

When Kelly got back to his room later that evening looking frustrated and disappointed, his roomies; Charles and Aigbedion knew something didn’t go right. They got even more indignant over the unfairness of Adesua’s meanness when Kelly concluded his narration. “Kelly my man, the campus is full of better girls. Forget that useless Adesua. She no even fine, she just de carry her k-leg de waka waka. I bin de suspect that girl but I just say mek I use eye watch.” Aigbedion expressed his consolation. Charles saw things in a different light entirely. His words of comfort weren’t much comforting. It was more on changing the game, which he tried to educate Kelly on the methodology. But he couldn’t be serious for too long. In fact, he was already feasting on the bottle of wine and the Pringles. “I never chop this Pringles before o. Na so the tin dey salty? Hmmm, see wetin woman for go enjoy. Kelly no worry, every disappointment na blessing. Who for believe say I for drink better wine this evening. The Lord is good.”
“Charles you no even get heart, everything na joke to you. Emmm, but no finish that thing o. I be stakeholder o. I for like taste am too.” Aigbedion opened up. Irrespective of their different approaches, Kelly knew his friends were concerned. He felt better now as the air was lightened. He even announced to take them out to their regular canteen for evening meal. Charles who had been contemplating on what to have for dinner was the most thrilled. He literarily kissed Kelly’s forehead to the disgust of everyone. He was definitely going to request for extra meat.

Over their meal, Charles re-launched the earlier suggestion he made to Kelly back in the room. “Look Kelly, you can still finish this. You can’t just back out. I’m not implying that you go back and kiss her arse, no. What I’m saying is, you can actually make her beg to kiss your own arse. All you need is a game change.” He paused to swallow a giant ball of wheat with egusi. Kelly was becoming interested. He couldn’t help wondering how that could be possible. Adesua was high-shouldered and would not hang out with him, he was almost sure of that but what was the game change Charles was emphasizing on? How could he be so confident of that? Even if Charles was right and he could get Adesua, he was sure he wasn’t going to date her for long. Love was no more in the equation. He just needed to redeem his prestige. He was not a loser. He was not a douchebag. The memory of the whole scene of embarrassment flooded his virtual image faculty and all he could do was take a deep breath to cool off. “Charles, what’s your proposal? Speak.” When his roommate finished plotting the graphs and obtained the gradient, Kelly had never felt more excited in his life to make another move. It was like acting a movie script. “I’m in bro. I’m in.” Charles was beaming with pride and confidence as his proposal was taken with delight. “Fair enough! I’m ready to put you through the stages then. ‘Hope you got the balls and the cash.”

Stage One: Become Popular
“On campus, there are several categories of guys. These categories directly affect the kind of girls they get. The church goers get the sister Marys if they’re lucky. The social guys get pretty girls while the book freaks end up virgins. But there’s a special category; the popular guys—this category hits the jackpot and go home with the golden cheque. Being popular doesn’t just make them social but well known. They become idols and are craved after. They are the gods of campus and like gods, they are worshiped and celebrated. They get the hottest girls on campus and material girls like Adesua love popular guys. The truth is; one doesn’t have to be super rich to get to this level. It’s purely a function of strategies. There are several platforms to gaining popularity. One is through political offices, another is through high level of socialization, another, through cultism while another could be through possession of excessive cash. Don’t ask me how I know these things but be sure that you, my friend, will have to become popular and I’m going to press some buttons for that to happen. First of all, let’s start with your wardrobe and haircut. If you need a Rihanna, you have to look like Chris Brown.” That was Charles breaking down the first phase to Kelly.

People didn’t have difficulties noticing how much Kelly had transformed in just three months after semester resumption. In addition to the crown of Face of Swag; a campus modeling contest which he had competed keenly for and won, he also emerged the best stage artiste on the Inter-faculty Spit Fire Music Battle. Kelly had managed to convince his mom to lend him one of her cars for the semester and the 2012 silver Honda Accord boosted his swag to the ceiling. His dressing and accessories didn’t match that of Lil’ Wayne but was enough to make the heads of ladies turn with a big “wow” on their faces. No one called him Kelly anymore, everyone now knew him as K-Swag. Kelly, Charles and Aigbedion formed an intimidating clique that made many young males in their department want to hang out with them. During lectures, they usually walked into the class couple of minutes late after everyone was seated and the whole class will start to cheer them up, to the vexation of the lecturers. Like wild fire, with the help of Charles, the whole faculty and a good part of the campus knew the new Kelly—Mr. K-Swag.

Eki, Adesua’s roommate was helping Adesua shape her eyebrows with a razor blade over their table where the long mirror stood. Aimiuwu was sitting in bed, fumbling over the pages of ECC 221 handout, obviously having concentration issues. They were casually chatting over the regular things ladies in a room talk about until Eki mentioned the name, “K-Swag”. As the name was mentioned, no one giggled, no one laughed, they just waited for Adesua to break the silence. It was deliberate as they intended to know how she felt about him. “What? Ehn? Why do you stop Eki? Abeg finish up.” even with the nonchalance she tried to display, Eki could hear a slight tone of envy in her voice. She knew the kind of guys Adesua liked. Unfortunately, Kelly didn’t make any further move on her after that night. He had transformed so suddenly and had almost any girl he wanted. If they could have seen the future, they wouldn’t have messed with the young man that night. “Let me just tell you girls my mind. If K-Swag asks me out, I don’t care if it’s for a night or a semester, I’ll drop it down for him. I’m really tripping for that dude.” Aimiuwu spoke from where she was seated. She said it casually but they all knew there was 99% truth in that. “What makes you think he’ll even notice you with all those girls around him? The guy na fine boy sha. He’s lucky to be swimming in money. I wouldn’t mind ridding with him, that is, if Ade is not still interested o. Ade you never say anything o.” Eki said as she carefully drew the eye pencil over Adesua’s shaved brows. Adesua knew they wanted to hear her opinion but Eki had said it all. He was swimming in money and rocking campus like he owned it. If there was a chance he made any advance towards her, this time, she would be insane to play hard-to-get. Her boyfriend had left her for another girl but that didn’t bother her so much since she was a freelancer. It only made her more available. If she could be pictured on campus as K-Swag’s right hand shawty, that would do her more good than getting a four-point semester grade point. Unfortunately, she did not disclose these feelings to her friends as she suspected they’d make fun of her.

Stage Two: Make Your Move
Charles had successfully launched Kelly into limelight which was the most crucial stage. He was certain the young man was ready for stage two. They were playing PRO11 soccer in their room; Charles and Kelly. He had defeated Aigbedion and was presently leading the scoreline on Kelly. In ten minutes time, he was the champion again. Kelly dropped the pad with disappointment and climbed on his bed, picking up his blinking Samsung Note III from the nearby table. He had a couple of Whatsapp notifications but he wasn’t going to answer them at the moment. He was already getting used to the flooding messages and Facebook requests. Charles left the laptop for Aigbedion to watch a movie and came over to sit by Kelly. “You see why I always remain the champion? Strategies man! Strategies! I noticed where your formation was leaking and took advantage. That’s what makes me the king of the game. It’s not about blaming the pad. Hahaha!” He was having that complacency again. “Talk from now till tomorrow, na me just gree mek you shine for the game.” Kelly replied him. “Talking about game, that brings us to the second stage of your mission. Seriously Kelly, I had doubts you’ll ever pass the first stage. This time, you’ll have to link the broken cord with Adesua. Now, you’re too big to go knocking at her door. I bet my balls she’s tripping for you and wouldn’t risk it this time. This is how the game will go, listen carefully.” For the next one hour, Charles and Kelly were deeply engrossed in plotting the bar chart, deducing median and mean, crosschecking variance, and substituting into the standard deviation. It was a perfect plot.

It was a surprise when Adesua bumped into Kelly in the cafeteria. She regularly took her lunch there but was a bit thrown off balance as she almost collided with Kelly who was on phone walking towards the counter while she was carrying her tray of fried yam and egg sauce to her table. “Oh! So sorry! I didn’t notice. . .” Adesua apologized but Kelly paused her midway with a casual dismissal wave. “It’s nothing. Don’t worry about it.” He reached the counter, placed his request, took his meal and located a seat at Adesua’s table, causing the young lady a mixed feeling of guilt and thrill. Memories of the past lingered in their minds but Kelly was on the mission, he didn’t need to be clouded by distractions. “‘Pleased to meet you again Adesua. I almost couldn’t recognize you. I must say, you look prettier than I recall. The huge guy with the nice ride is doing a good job.” Adesua chuckled in amusement, feeling flattered too. She tried to avoid eye contact and sound as confident as possible. “Thanks Kelly-or should I say K-Swag. Well, nice meeting you again. Congrats on your emergence as Mr. Swag.” Kelly was happy she didn’t refer to anything concerning the last incident they had, even though along the line of conversation, she mentioned something about “the past” and “wishing some things never happened the way they did.” He did not expect her to come out plain; her haughtiness couldn’t permit that.

They had a lengthy discussion over their meals and several things were revealed to Kelly, including her separation from her boyfriend and the readable signs that she was now interested in him. Kelly couldn’t help noticing the air of pride that was still circling around her in every way she conducted herself; starting from the way she ate to the way she talked, to the way she kept throwing back her head to keep her hair backward. The only thing that earned Kelly a table with her was his self-attained social status and swag. She loved to identify with celebs and live the superfluous life. He was willing to be that celeb. It was time to tell her what he had in mind. “I think we can still work out something between us, after all, you were my first crush. Why don’t you give me the pleasure of taking you to a mind-blowing place you’ve never been to. It’s a new resort in Calabarr. I’d love to spend next Saturday with you there.” If Kelly’s statement didn’t excite Adesua, then she was either a corpse or a catholic nun but she had to keep her calm and act the lady. “Are you asking me out on a date?” It was more a redundant question but he still answered a yes. This time, she didn’t play tough to get. Kelly paid for both meals and left the cafeteria after some pleasantries. It was fixed; they were going to have a date all the way in Calabarr. The hilarious part was that as Kelly departed, Adesua’s mind quickly crafted a plan towards the date. Even though she made up her mind to honour the date, she wasn't going to give him everything on a platter of gold.  Unknown to her, Kelly was also up to something. But as they say, “He who laughs last laughs best,” show time was on.

HOW TO MEET YOUR MARK THIS 2016! --TeamGistCreek

Many of us have laid down budgets, plans and made adjustments in a bid to succeed in a wider capacity this New Year. In order to meet your marks or targets, you must have the following ingredients to bring your plans to life:
THE GOD-FACTOR
In whatever you lay your hands on, you can only flourish when you have the help of the Divine. Trust in God; commit all your plans to Him.
STRATEGISE
Before one sets out for the farm, he must have a hoe, a machete and other tools. In the same way, you must first of all identify your problem and find the adequate means to solve it.
HAVE A PLAN-B
Many people make the mistake of always putting all their eggs in one basket. A real hustler does not play by this rule. Don't rule out failure in your plan. If plan-A fails, what happens then? Always have a backup plan.
BE FOCUSED
Avoid being lazy or procrastinating. If you've set out to achieve something, then put all your energy in it. Do not be distracted by luxuries or emotions. Look forward.
KEEP THE RIGHT COMPANY
If you must be a success, if you’re to meet your targets, you must let go of friends that have nothing to offer. Why walk with a pessimist or a lazy ass? Surround yourself with prosperous people who share your dreams to make it and who believe in your dreams.
SELF CONFIDENCE
Sometimes our plans may not unfold the way we envisaged but learn to believe in yourself. Learn to be your own strength even when the walls around you are crumbling. Always believe you’re a Star!

TALES FROM THE SLUM 3 --by Slick

CHINEDU
It was a sunny Monday. He was dressed in a blue striped shirt and black chinos trousers with a pair of black LaCosté shoes to match. He was standing on the queue in UBA just within the neighbourhood to make withdrawals of his savings while he worked at the filling station. He had hoped that whatever he had saved up would be sufficient to take care of his bills and miscellaneous expenses for the period in which his unemployment lasted. He was quiet and his eyes fixed on the Western Union advert that was just across the banking hall. He was unconsciously listening to the buzzing sounds of doors, clicks of computers and murmurings by other customers that complained of the slow services of the bank. It eventually got to his turn and he withdrew every single dime he had collected over the years. He was just about to walk out of the bank premises when he ran into Anita at the ATM. Though she had tried to avoid him, but Chinedu ensured that he was in full glare.
“Hey honey, how are we?” Chinedu said as he walked towards her.
“Chi, I am fine o. What are you doing here this early?”
“I just came to make some withdrawals my love.” Chinedu replied as he tried to catch a glimpse of her account balance.
“Okay, that sounds typical for a Monday. I even ran into your friend Tunde on my way here.”
“Don’t mind that foolish boy. But babe, your account is breathing fine o. Wanna tell me your secret formula?”
By this time, they had left the banking premises together and Chinedu had offered to walk her towards her home before leaving for the business of the day. They talked as they walked along the way. An onlooker could tell that these two were in super love. But who would have thought that Chinedu didn’t know that his sweetheart had just made a withdrawal of the money that James had sent her. They were finally at her gate and exchanged final pleasantries and hugs before parting.
Chinedu was grateful to the Universe for sending an angel his way in the form of Anita. She was the only woman that could understand him, the only woman that knew his weaknesses and strengths, the one for him. He flagged down an Okada rider and gave him necessary information on his destination. As he got to his door, he found a letter stuck at the door knob addressed to him by a mystery person. He was taken aback because his neighbours had told him that they did not see anyone come to deliver the letter. Within the comfort of his room, he sat down to read the content of the letter; that had read: “FOR YOUR GOOD” on the brown envelope that enclosed the letter.

Mr. Chinedu Oboh,
I sincerely thank you for being a good care-taker in my absence for some years now. I have seen your good works and show of affection towards my betrothed wife Anita. I believe that this little revelation could come as a shocker, but the world we live in is one full of beautiful surprises. I am a man that holds respect in high levels and as such I thought I would show you some respect by sending this letter to you. I have watched you from afar, even till this morning when you went to the bank; and later did a good job of taking my wife home. I thank you for your kind gesture.
Chinedu, henceforth you shall desist from seeing Anita Nwokoye. I have come to take what is mine. I have come to take care of things myself. I sent her a hundred thousand naira just some days ago and I plan to do more. Things that you cannot do in your present condition. We are currently in contact with each other and are trying to make the best of our communication. By the way, did she tell you we have a son? Please stay away FOR YOUR GOOD.
------------------------
King Of The Slum.

The letter dropped from Chinedu’s hands to the floor as he tried to comprehend what he had just read. It felt like he was in a trance. He needed someone to wake him from this dream. He was afraid. This was deceit. It couldn’t be true. Did Anita have any idea about this, being that he was with her earlier today? A lot of questions had to be answered. He fell upon his bed and simply closed his eyes and slept off.

 ANITA
“James, how could you? Are you crazy or something?”
“Baby, what are you saying?”
“Why would you do a thing as stupid and selfish as that?” Anita asked again.
“Anita, did I tell you we were through?”
“James, you disappeared into thin air without a word”.
“Is that the reason why you have refused to let me see our son? Do you know the evil things I had to do in South Africa just to come back to fend for you and my son?”
“Do not bring Jason into this. That’s very cowardly”
“Madam, you dey talk rubbish o. E be like say, that Chinedu don give you Juju chop. But, don’t worry I am here to deliver you. You know what I can do.”
James slammed the door shut as he walked out of Anita’s home. She was left holding a brown envelope that contained the money that James had sent to her. She had planned to return the money to him, but the fury she had seen in his eyes killed the thought almost immediately. He had boxed her in using the little detail of the love child they had together. James had disappeared on hearing about her pregnancy and she had become a disgrace to her mother who had trained her to do better. She had endured all those years of pain alone until she met Chinedu. She did not have any idea that James would come back some day to tear her world again just as he was doing now. She thought of Chinedu, his predicament, her son, her mother and the new King of the Slum; James.
A lot was just about to unfold. She was still swimming in her thoughts, when her phone rang. It was a call from Dupe. What did she want? She ignored the call and promised to call her up later. She had pressing matters to attend to.

“What’s your name?” I asked, he mumbled some words which I barely heard. “Kingsley? Nice name.” “No,” he responded almost immediately, “I said Victor.” I repeated the same compliments.
Young victor stretched and strained his neck, just to catch a glimpse of the scene that was unfolding. Some minutes later, he sat back on his seat and his head lowered. I caught a glimpse of his face, I recognized the look on it and I hoped he was going to be stronger than I was when I was his age. He didn’t disappoint, he didn’t cry. I wrapped my arms around his neck, “Everything will be fine,” I said to him but not out loud. Throughout the course of our journey, nothing was said of his father and despite every side comment by the other commuters, who didn’t hide their displeasure over Victor’s mother’s decision to take with her so many kids on such a journey, her mother never gave any explanation as to where her husband was. It wasn’t said but from what was implied, Victor’s mother seemed to be his only parent alive. God, I hope I’m wrong, I really hope I am.

Just like Victor, they’re lots of kids out there, kids with only one parent or none at all. In most cases, these kids actually have both parents living but these parents, do not have the financial power to take care of them. This is one the things that disturb me most in this country. Most of the parents who do not have the financial capability to groom two children comfortably, often go as far as having five or more children. It makes little or no sense to reproduce children if you’re not capable of fending for them. Most parents are ignorant of family planning and take no appropriate child-birth control measures.  The product of this ignorance, is having more kids than they can handle.
Eventually all they’ll do is Worry! Worry! Worry! About how they’ll pay tuitions, provide basic amenities, etc. With time, they develop a bitter spirit, get feisty and let their frustrations get the better of them when they discipline their children, rather than nurture the kids with the love and care they deserve. Worse still, they begin to develop heart related ailments.

Things get worse if one of the parent dies. It’s worst if it is the man that dies. Oh Ayin Eka! The in-laws will just come and pack everything. That’s probably the only truth Nollywood depicts in their movies. Some African traditions never cease to disgust me. How will the mother carter for the children? Most African in-laws are only interested in the luxuries of today. Before you know it, the kids are out of school. The they’ll be sent to become apprentices and then, they get frustrated with life and the treatment meted out on them by their ‘relatives’ and before you know it, they’ll try to outsmart everybody they come across. Some though, not all.

Some of you might defend this by claiming children are gifts from God. Well, maybe you don’t know that your house is a blessing too but does that mean you should go and build 1000 buildings just so you can show the world that it is GOD’s blessing? They are gifts from GOD but that doesn’t mean you should accumulate more than you can handle. That’s greed. Precisely speaking, I don’t believe GOD will support anyone who abuses His gifts. Most parents do it as a form gamble, having many kids with the hope that one of them will excel. I think an important question parents should always ask themselves is this, “If I leave for whatever reason, will my partner be able to take care of them alone?” No I won’t use death, it’s too sensitive.

It’s vital for married couples to be sincere when it comes to the issue of reproduction. It is not just fair to have so many kids, most of whom may end up at the wrong side of the law as a result of the carelessness of their parents, which often arise when they bite more than they can chew. If you’re not capable of nurturing a certain number of children comfortably, then don’t give them life. Parents should always try not to punch above their weight. Use the appropriate child-control measures and family planning means, of which abortion is not one of them (my opinion sha).
